The 34th Departmental Research Conference
April 22, 2017 (Sat.) Chihiro Nakayama, Ph.D. Course Students

At the conference, 13 Ph.D. course students delivered presentations, including the incoming department members who had joined in April 2017: Dr. Norihiro Yoshimoto and Dr. Wang Yunan, both of whom entered the Hokkaido University Graduate School, and Dr. Masae Takeda, who entered the master’s course.

Team Natsuga presented on epidermal homeostasis, micro-wound healing and keratinocytes in epidermal bullosa. Team Ujiie’s presentations were on the immune mechanism of mainly T cells relating to the pathogenesis of bullous pemphigoid. Team Iwata delivered presentations on mucous pemphigoid antibodies.

Team Nomura spoke on elucidating the mechanism behind revertant mosaicism in utosomal recessive ichthyoses, hereditary keratodermas and DNA replication. Team Fujita’s presentations focused on the analysis of revertant mosaicism in epidermolysis bullosa, a novel treatment using iPS-cell-derived mesenchymal stem or stromal cells from human keratinocytes and the development of a gene therapy using the CRISPR/ Cas9 system.Team Yanagi presented research on Drp1, a molecule associated with mitochondrial mitosis in dermal carcinogenesis. The discussions after each prese ntation were very lively. All the department members shared their experiences and problems regarding all their research. It was a meaningful experience for everyone.

The 35th Departmental Research Conference
December 9, 2017 (Sat.) Norihiro Yoshimotos, Ph.D. Course Students

At the research conference in December 2017, 20 people delivered presentations: the head of each lab and Ph.D. course students. Team Fujita presented on a cell therapy for epidermolysis bullosa, the application of a treatment that relies on revertant mosaicism, the generation of mesenchymal cells from iPS cells originating from human keratinocytes, and the relationship between genetic defects in the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway and skin symptoms. Team Nomura presented on the elucidation of the pathomechanism and treatment of Nagashima-type palmoplantar keratosis and development of revertant cell in ichthyoses. And Team Yanagi presented on the role of epidermal Drp1 in squamous cell carcinoma.

Team Ujiie presented on the following: the relationship between DPP-4 inhibitor-related BP and HLA, the involvement of the CD4 subset and regulatory T cells in the generation of bullous pemphigoid, the development of a basement membrane protein autoreactive T cell clone, and the relationship between the DPP-4 inhibitor and cytokine. Team Natsuga presented on epithelial reactions to physical stimulation, the role of type XVII collagen in epidermal homeostasis, and the process of re-epithelialization in micro wounds. Team Iwata presented on the examination of complement system and analyses of collagen in the epidermis and the mucosa. The conference saw active discussion, with questions from not only graduate school students, but also from young resident doctors. It was a meaningful time.
