2015 Overview of Departmental Research Laboratories
Research teams are working day and night to advance the frontiers of dermatological science. Great progress is expected.

The largest change for the Hokkaido University Department of Dermatology has been Senior Associate Professor Abe’s move to Niigata University to become professor of the der-matology department there. The void left by the departure of the senior associate professor, who had been a central pillar supporting the laboratories, is considerable. Dr. Abe’s absence has caused the entire laboratory system to be changed. To be frank, it’s a tough situation, but Dr. Abe’s accession to his new position has created new opportuni-ties for the younger doctors. Dr. Nishie has been promoted to senior associate professor, and Dr. Fujita to associate professor.

Looking back to when I assumed professorship of this department, I remember inviting Drs. Sawamura and Akiyama to set up a research system at the department. The research team leaders at that time were only three doc-tors: Associate Professor Sawamura (presently a professor at Hirosaki University), Assistant Professor Akiyama (pres-ently a professor at Nagoya University) and Assistant Professor Tadamichi Shimizu (presently a professor at Toyama University). The labs were simply named the 1st, 2nd and 3rd laboratories. Currently, thanks to the depart-ment’s efforts over the course of many years, most of the doctors ranking assistant professor or higher have done research abroad. They’re able to lead their own research teams. Based on this development, we’ve changed our research system to one with research groups that are named after their chiefs: Team Nishie, Team Fujita, Team Ujiie, Team Nomura, Team Hata / Yanagi, Team Iwata, Team Natsuga and Team Shinkuma. Each research team has graduate students and a laboratory technician. And each team has been working on a large project for submission to a major journal. “Big papers” can’t be produced in just a year of research. Results are expected after a few years of steady work on a given theme.

To enhance the clinical level of the department members, I encourage the young doctors to study hard so that they’re able to write case reports in English. Instructing the team young department members to write case reports in English is an important role of the team leaders. I’d like to ask you to look forward to results from our department’s new research system this year.
